About us

We explore the role of education in promoting people’s autonomy and well-being, and in strengthening Communities – including through the prevention of situations of hardship – in order to build a more inclusive, collaborative and democratic society.

Our research and teaching activities focus on the educational processes that accompany people throughout their lives.

The various divisions of educational sciences define and carry out research projects that provide an ever-stronger foundation for educational and teaching practices in schools, educational services, out-of-school settings, vocational training and lifelong and continuing education.

Our presence across the region

Our locations at our historic campus in Bologna and our campus in Rimini enable us to maintain a significant presence throughout the region: from teaching activities to our numerous Third Mission initiatives.

In this way, we are in constant contact with local communities to promote inclusive and democratic values, particularly where conditions of disadvantage and vulnerability exist.

Who benefits from our activities

Schools, regional education offices (USR), ministerial and local bodies responsible for educational services, the third sector in the implementation of educational and emancipatory processes addressing social disadvantage and educational poverty, the Region, and local and national bodies that promote vocational training and on-the-job training, including in the corporate field of human resources management.

Studying Educational Sciences

Two three-year degree programmes that prepare educational professionals with a solid grounding in Educational Sciences, equipping them to work in services for children aged 0 to 3 (Early Years Educator) and in the diverse social and cultural contexts of care and support for children’s development, including in challenging situations (Social and Cultural Educator).

The three Second cycle/Two-year Master's degrees prepare educational professionals who are competent in planning, managing and conducting evaluation within a variety of contexts—formal, informal and non-formal.

The single cycle/Combined Bachelor's and Master's degree in Primary Education qualifies future nursery and primary school teachers.

At the intersection of research and teaching lies the PhD degree/PhD programme in Pedagogical Sciences, which promotes theoretical, historical, didactic and empirical-experimental research in the fields of pedagogy and educational psychology.

Thanks to our numerous partnerships with organisations and institutions, we offer a wide range of international projects under the Erasmus+ programmes.

Who we collaborate with to bridge the gap between research and society

EDU fosters numerous collaboration agreements and partnerships with public and private bodies: from local councils to regional authorities, from schools to regional education offices – Regional School Offices (USR) nationwide, Local Health Authorities (ASL), the ministerial bodies INDIRE and INVALSI, social cooperatives and the third sector more generally – right through to agreements with companies active in the field of human and social development, Charitable Institutions/Foundations and other institutions committed to educational issues, including at the level of international cooperation.

Our third mission activities: projects to make society more aware of its resources and responsibilities

Together with the community, we design initiatives in the educational, cultural, psychological and social spheres; we develop programmes to prevent social hardship and foster community development, including in challenging settings such as prisons and care homes for young people.
